Survival Mode: Maintaining Health Through Hardships & Tragedy

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

The unthinkable happens…

I remember waking up to do an early morning workout a few years ago, and I glanced at my phone first real quick. There was a message on my phone about a tragedy that happened over night to someone that I love. Something horrible - the unthinkable. I walked to my workout space and just felt in that moment, “What’s the point? Why even do this? Why even try?”

Well, some time has passed now and I actually invited that person that I love on the show with us today to share her story of that exact tragedy. But she’s also going to share how she did find hope and the exact pieces and habits of self-care that she needed in those hardest moments of her life, and then what her self-care routine looks like now - after all that. This is a moving conversation… if you have a box of kleenex handy, go grab it.

And then let’s jump in and meet my friend Keli Martin.

Hey Keli, welcome to the podcast!

I’m honored that you’re here and so very thankful, because as you know, around here we don’t candy coat anything. We don’t pretend that life is easier than it really is. We live in real world, where our kids are going through struggles, we are facing financial troubles, we have a parent that has some major health issues that we need to help them through, or we have to navigate the unthinkable - the worst thing ever. And yet, somehow our body and taking care of ourselves is still part of the picture.

Questions from this interview:

  • We all have seasons in our lives where it feels like we’re operating in survival mode, barely making it from one day to the next. Can you share the story of what launched you into a level of survival mode that many of us will hopefully never have to experience?
  • What had your fitness and nutrition routine looked like in the year prior to Jeff’s death?
  • What were some of the biggest fitness, nutrition & mindset challenges that you had been working on overcoming before the unthinkable happened? And how did you think and feel about your body during that time?
  • How did these things, without realizing it, prepare you to be healthy through what was to come?
  • What habits helped you the most when you were in the deepest valleys of grief?
  • Have you noticed any changes in your perspective about your health and your body because of this tragedy?
  • What does life look for you now? What is still hard? What hope and joy are you experiencing?
  • If there’s any word of encouragement or big takeaway that you’d like to offer for someone that’s persevering through their own survival mode season, what would you say?
